Choosing Dried Tangerine Peel

Choosing Dried Tangerine Peel

There are many unripe peels and fake aged peels on the market. How do Hong Kong people tell the difference?

Tangerine peel is the soul of Hong Kong wellness teas, especially when paired with Pu’er – but quality varies widely today. Many are “green peel” – harvested unripe from the tree and hastily dried. Traditionally, green peel is cooling and “breaks qi” (depletes energy), harming the spleen and stomach – the opposite of true aged peel’s qi-tonifying and regulating effects. It can burden rather than benefit the body.
Others are only aged a few months, machine-dried at high heat, artificially accelerated, or sulphur-fumigated – thin aroma, strong bitterness, even chemical notes, which can irritate the gut.

True aged tangerine peel is naturally air-dried, shade-dried, and stored for years (at least 3–5, often 10+). Over time, the aroma shifts from fresh citrus to warm, medicinal sweetness with fruity and subtle woody notes – no bitterness, just lingering sweetness. It promotes smooth qi flow, resolves dampness, strengthens the spleen, warms the middle, and soothes digestive discomfort.

Hong Kong people who’ve drunk it for decades know the difference instantly – real peel has gentle, lasting aroma and leaves the stomach comfortable and the mind clear. Old Hong Kong herbal shops hand-selected, turned, and stored peel with care and patience – a tradition machines can’t replace.

In Japan (especially Kansai), Tangerine Pu’er is perfect for:

•  Autumn/winter chill or damp days (Osaka winters are humid – warms the stomach and expels dampness)
•  After rich Japanese meals (takoyaki, kushikatsu, ramen – clears grease and aids digestion)
•  Those with weak digestion, bloating, or sluggishness (warms the middle and moves qi)
•  Evenings when stressed but seeking gentle relaxation (mild and soothing before bed)

At Faith, we use only properly aged premium tangerine peel paired with traditional Hong Kong ripe Pu’er – delivering the most reliable, heartfelt Hong Kong wellness.
